Overcoming the Heat: Rosie’s Top Indoor Activities for Bernese Mountain Dogs

Feeling the Heat: A Berner’s Summer Struggle

Have you ever seen a Bernese Mountain Dog panting away, sprawled across the cold kitchen floor on a hot summer day? Let me tell you, it’s not a pretty sight. As a Bernese Mountain Dog, I, Rosie, have a thick double coat that’s perfect for frolicking in the snow, but when it comes to the summer heat? Not so much.

Take it from me, there was one particularly hot day when the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and every pup in the neighborhood was out playing. But me? I was sprawled out on the cool kitchen floor, refusing to budge. It was just too darn hot!

Indoor Shenanigans: Awakening the Puppy Within

But don’t worry, my friends, I’ve found ways to keep the summer fun going indoors! Despite my size, I’ve still got a whole lot of puppy energy inside me. Some of my favorite games include hide and seek and tug-of-war. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of finding the perfect hiding spot or the satisfaction of winning a good tug-of-war match!

One day, my family and I decided to create our very own indoor obstacle course using furniture and toys. We had tunnels (made from tables and chairs), jumps (made from cushions), and even a maze (made from boxes)! It was a blast and the best part? I stayed cool throughout the whole adventure!

Food Puzzles: Snack Time and Brain Exercise Combined

Another activity I’ve grown to love is food puzzles. They’re not just great for keeping me cool, but they also give my brain a good workout. My first encounter with a food puzzle was an interesting one. I was a little puzzled (pun intended) at first, but once I got the hang of it, I was hooked! Now, it’s one of my favorite summer activities. It’s like a treasure hunt with a delicious reward at the end!

Trick Training: An Indoor Journey of Learning

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I beg to differ. Despite the heat, I’ve managed to learn a bunch of new tricks, like ‘paw,’ ‘high five,’ and ‘hug.’ My humans say it’s a fun and engaging way to keep me occupied indoors, and I have to agree. Every time I learn a new trick, it’s like a mini celebration in our house!

Let me share a quick story. One hot summer day, after a session of indoor games and a food puzzle, my family decided to teach me a new trick: ‘hug.’ It took a few tries (and a few treats), but I eventually got the hang of it. Now, ‘hug’ is my go-to trick, and it always brings a smile to everyone’s face!

These indoor activities have not only helped me overcome the heat but also brought me closer to my family. We’ve created so many beautiful memories together, all within the cool confines of our home. So, if you have a Bernese Mountain Dog (or any dog, really) struggling with the summer heat, why not try some of these activities? Not only will your pup stay cool, but you’ll also have a ton of fun together!

I’d love to hear your stories about how you keep your Bernese Mountain Dogs cool and engaged during the summer. And remember, follow me on my social media accounts for more tips, stories, and insights into life as a Bernese Mountain Dog. Stay cool, my friends!
