Why the Dog Days of Summer Aren’t My Favorite
Hi folks, it’s Rosie here! Now, as a Bernese Mountain Dog, I’ve got a thick, beautiful coat that’s perfect for icy winters, but truth be told, I sometimes find those hot summer days a bit too much to handle. But fear not, my doggie pals and the humans who love them, I’ve got some fantastic ways to beat the heat and stay cool when the sun is shining bright!
My first summer was a real eye-opener. I remember bounding around the yard, chasing my tail, and suddenly feeling… well, too hot. My humans noticed me panting heavily and quickly ushered me inside. That’s when I realized, this Bernese is not built for the heat!
My breed, the Bernese Mountain Dog, is known for its thick, beautiful coat. It’s perfect for the snowy Swiss mountains we were originally bred to work in, but it doesn’t fare so well in the sweltering summer sun. I’ve mastered the art of showing my humans when I’m uncomfortable in the heat. A little heavy panting, some lethargy, and they know it’s time for a cool down.
My Go-To Chill Out Techniques
Over the years, I’ve become quite the expert in cooling off. My favorite spot? The cold kitchen floor. It’s the perfect place to sprawl out and enjoy some much-needed relief from the heat. And let me tell you about my love affair with ice cubes. They’re a crunchy, cool treat that not only hydrates but also helps bring my body temperature down.
Speaking of hydration, my humans are fantastic at making sure I always have access to fresh, cool water. It’s so important to stay hydrated when it’s hot out. And when the heat really ramps up, there’s nothing quite like a dip in my kiddie pool. It’s like my own personal oasis!
Beat the Heat with Indoor Fun
When the summer sun is at its peak, indoor activities are my saving grace. A good game of tug always gets my tail wagging and helps keep me mentally stimulated. I also love learning new tricks, it keeps my brain working and distracts me from the heat.
Then there’s the time my humans introduced me to puzzle toys. I was skeptical at first, but boy, did I quickly become a fan! They keep me entertained for hours and have become a summer staple in our household.
Savoring the Cooler Hours: Our Dawn and Dusk Adventures
To avoid the afternoon heat, my family and I have adjusted our routine. Our adventures now happen early in the morning or late in the evening. There’s something magical about watching the sunrise during our early morning walks or chasing fireflies at dusk. These are moments I wouldn’t trade for anything.
But even during these cooler times, it’s important for my humans to monitor me for signs of heatstroke. They’ve become well-versed in the signs and always make sure I’m comfortable and safe.
Summer may not be my favorite season, but with a little planning and a lot of love from my humans, I’ve learned how to stay cool and have fun even on the hottest days. Remember, my fellow pups, it’s all about staying safe and comfortable. So, here’s to a summer full of cool floors, delicious ice cubes, and fun under the stars! Stay cool, friends!
